Gemstones. Peridot is the birthstone for August.

Peridot is the gem variety of Olivine. Olivine is a very abundant mineral, but gem quality Peridot is rare. Peridot is a precious gemstone. Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color, an olive green.

The intensity and hue of the green depends on how much iron is contained in the crystal structure. The color of individual peridot gemstones can vary from yellow green to olive green to brownish green. The most valued color is a dark olive green.

Peridot and Diamonds are the only two gemstones that are formed in the Earth’s mantle. All other gemstones are formed in the Earth’s crust. Peridot is the only gemstone ever found in meteorites.

Gemstones. Zircon is the birthstone for December.

Don’t confuse Zircon with man-made cubic zirconia. Zircon is a natural gemstone found in the crust of the Earth among igneous rocks such as granite. Zircon is found all over the world in Australia, Russia, Italy, Norway, Cambodia, Africa, Canada, Maine, Colorado, and Texas. Australia leads the world in mining Zircon. A Zircon fragment found there is the oldest known object on Earth at 4.4 billion years old.

Zircon can be found in many colors such as red, pink, brown, black, green, blue, gray, white (colorless), and yellow. Red Zircon is the most rare, and some of the finest Blue Zircon comes from Cambodia. Yellow Zircon is known as hyacinth, a name given long ago in ancient Greece.

Zircon is very hard and durable. The dispersion value (fire) of Zircon is 0.039, which is just below that of a Diamond. Gem quality White Zircon is a perfect alternative for a White Diamond and Champagne Zircon is similar in color to a Champagne or Cognac Diamond. With Jewels Luxus Jewelry, you can look like a million bucks without spending a fortune.

Date added: 04/12/2013 On The Jeweler's Bench. Prasiolite.

Gemstones. Prasiolite, a word derived from Greek, is translated literally to: leek green colored stone.

Natural Prasiolite, a macro crystalline quartz, is a rare and superb green gemstone. The finest Prasiolite gemstones are transparent and contain no inclusions. Prasiolite occurs among igneous rocks such as granite, metamorphic rocks such as gneiss, and sedimentary rocks such as shale. Natural Prasiolite has been found in Brazil, (Thunder Bay) Canada, and Poland. Prasiolite most often occurs with Amethyst.

Often, natural Prasiolite is incorrectly called green Amethyst. However, green Amethyst is made by heating or irradiating purple Amethyst that is from certain geographical areas. The purple Amethyst will turn green. These green Amethyst shouldn't be called Prasiolite. Not all purple Amethyst will turn green when heated, most often it turns yellow or brown. These gemstones are often sold as Citrine, but they are not natural Citrine. These gemstones should be sold as yellow Amethyst.

If you are purchasing a high end gemstone, and you care if it is natural or heated, you can purchase a gemstone certification from the Gemological Institute Of America. Jewels Luxus Jewelry.
